Pinot Gris

Tasting Notes

Our bright J California Pinot Gris offers layers of generous fruit characteristics and a zesty finish for a delightfully approachable sip. The juicy palate bursts with notes of crunchy pear, fresh-picked white peach, lemon, lime and tart pineapple, while hints of jasmine and minerality add appealing texture and depth. Crisp, mouth-watering acidity at the finish cleanses the palate, making this an ideal partner for food. Pair this appealing Pinot Gris with grilled fish or chicken, or whitefish ceviche with jicama, mango and avocado. For a cheese pairing, try creamy chèvre topped with citrus marmalade.

Vintage Comments

The 2019 growing season in California was very high quality. Warm and evenly paced, these ideal growing conditions delivered high-quality fruit into the cellar. The season began with plentiful winter rains and a cool and occasionally wet spring. Though conditions delayed development, they provided ample water resources for the vines through the season. A warm and steady summer emerged by June, as vines developed healthy clusters with complex flavors and excellent structure. Cool temperatures late in the season preserved the fruit’s bright acidity. Harvest began later in the year, allowing fruit to come into the cellar at optimal ripeness.

Winemaking

Following hand-harvesting, we pressed whole clusters using gentle cycles to minimize extraction of harsh components from the skins and seeds. Wine from each appellation was divided into lots and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks. To preserve the freshness of the fruit and floral aromas, the wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation. Following primary fermentation, we aged vineyard lots separately until blending, allowing for the development of a range of distinctive aroma and flavor components that were ultimately blended to create a bright, layered wine.
